Mill Pond Shoppes in Long GroveShady Lady: Garden Ferns
Full, feathery ferns are an essential component of your shade garden. Lush textures and shades of deep green add depth to shady spots. Garden ferns varieties range from 12" to 48" tall. Some varieties spread and can fill large areas, but might aggressively squeeze out more delicate shade species.
All-Nite Diners
Sick of waking up to a deer munched garden? Deer can do a lot of damage to an
urban or rural landscape. They eat native brush in the countryside, but seem
to prefer our succulent gardens. If you're tired of spraying deer repellent,
consider planting some of these perennial species known for their resistance
to deer's' hungry advances.
Keep coleus plants looking lush all season. If coleus starts to bloom, pinch off the flower stalk. Pinch all the way down to side branches that show no sign of flower buds. Pinch basil often to stave off flowering. What's pinched can be used in the kitchen.
Watch for powdery mildew on garden plants. Spray a fungicide on susceptible plants before the problem gets out of hand. Look for fungus on:
